When most people talk about posture, they are referring to the height of the keyboard at their work desk or the angle of their seat in their car. Is your upper back too round? Is your lower back too curved? The postures we observe in people in their daily lives are the same postures we recognize in golfers. In golfers, there are two main postures that can be identified: the "S" posture and the "C" posture. These postures can be evaluated by our TPI certified health care professional with the Kinatex Golf Program.
Good posture has the same spine angle you normally have while standing up straight. The only difference is that a good golf posture is bent from the hips with a neutral pelvic tilt.
The neutral pelvic tilt allows your arms to hang straight down naturally under your shoulders.
A good golf posture ensures a good path for your golf swing and for your golf ball. Poor posture can cause other swing characteristics that can negatively affect your game.
S-Posture is a swing characteristic caused by the player creating too much arch in their lower back. This excessive curvature in the lower back is called an S-Posture. It puts abnormally high stress on the muscles in the lower back and causes the abdominal muscles to relax. The deactivated core muscles can disrupt the backswing and in turn change the lower body's position during the downswing.
Hinging from the hips in the golf stance will allow a golfer to maintain a neutral spine without arching the back. Good core strength will help keep a neutral spine.
C-Posture is characterized by shoulders that are held forward and a clear roundness of the back is noticeable from the tailbone to the head. This posture will not permit a golfer to take a large backswing and will cause a loss of posture.
The "C" posture is usually due to many muscle imbalances and joint limitations accumulated over many years. Most golfers can physically adjust the posture by maintaining a more neutral spine and correct their set up position.
With the Kinatex Golf Program, we will assess your golf posture as well as 11 other golf swing characteristics. In addition, 16 biomechanical tests will be evaluated to better understand the strength and weaknesses of every individual golfer. Lastly, two programs will be provided to the golfer based on the assessment in order to improve the swing and the body mechanics.
